Questions & Answers
Finding the right way to mark life's significant moments can raise many questions. Here's some commonly asked questions.
What if we are not religious or humanist?
That is absolutely fine!
You do not need to be either, and you certainly do not need to know much about Humanism.
I work with people of all beliefs, no particular belief and everything in between. Your ceremony is not about fitting into a label. It is about you: your story, your values and the way you want the occasion to feel.
You may want something deeply romantic, quietly meaningful, full of laughter or refreshingly free of anything too sentimental. Whatever feels right, we will create a ceremony that feels personal, sincere and recognisably yours.
My role is to listen carefully, gather the memories, moments and details that matter, and shape them into a ceremony that feels warm, natural and true to you.
There is no need to worry about labels or categories. If you want a ceremony filled with warmth, personality and meaning, we already have a very good place to begin.

Wedding FAQs
Is a Humanist wedding ceremony legally binding in the UK?
In Scotland and Northern Ireland, yes. In England and Wales, Humanist ceremonies are currently not legally recognised, so couples visit a register office for a legal signing.
Can we include symbolic rituals like handfasting?
Absolutely. Humanist ceremonies are tailored to you. Handfasting, sand blending, or drinking from a loving cup can be seamlessly integrated.
How long does a wedding ceremony last?
Most ceremonies last between 25 and 45 minutes, depending on the rituals and personal story. We work together to ensure the perfect pacing.
Can we write our own vows?
Yes, and I highly encourage it. I provide guidance and examples to help you articulate your promises in words that feel authentic.
The registrars say they can customise the ceremony - is it the same?
A registrar-led ceremony may offer a few choices, but it is usually based on a standard script.
A celebrant ceremony is different. Your story, your personalities and your values are woven into something written entirely for you - creating a ceremony that feels personal, memorable and unmistakably yours.
Your love story deserves more than a template.
Funeral & Memorial FAQ
What is a Humanist funeral?
A Humanist funeral is a non-religious ceremony that focuses on the life, personality, and legacy of the person who has died, rather than on religious doctrines or beliefs about an afterlife.
Can we include music and readings?
Absolutely. Music, poems, and prose are central to the ceremony, providing moments for reflection and celebration of a life well-lived.
How long does a typical service last?
Most crematorium services are around 20-30 minutes, though we can arrange longer bookings if you wish for a more detailed memorial.
Where can the service take place?
Services are typically held at crematoriums, cemeteries, or woodland burial sites, but memorials can also be held in private homes or community venues.
Naming Ceremony FAQs
What is a Humanist Naming Ceremony?
It is a non-religious way to celebrate the arrival of a new child, focusing on personal values, shared promises, and the community of family and friends.
Where can we hold the ceremony?
Anywhere that feels right for you—your garden, a local hall, or even a park. There are no legal restrictions on the location for a naming ceremony.
Can we include 'Guideparents'?
Absolutely. You can choose mentors, guideparents, or oddparents to play a special role in your child's life and make public promises during the event.
How long does a ceremony last?
Typically between 20 and 30 minutes, though this depends on the readings, music, and symbolic acts you choose to include.
Can we include older siblings?
Of course. We can involve siblings through readings, symbolic actions, or simply by acknowledging their important role as a big brother or sister.
Is there a set script?
No. Each ceremony is written from scratch to reflect your family's story and the unique journey of your child.
Vow Renewal FAQs
Do we need a marriage license for a vow renewal?
No. A vow renewal is a symbolic ceremony celebrating your existing marriage. Since no legal change is occurring, there is no need for new legal documentation or licenses.
Can we involve our children or grandchildren in the ceremony?
Absolutely. One of the joys of a vow renewal is acknowledging the family you have built together. We can include roles for family members, from readings to shared symbolic acts.
Where can a humanist vow renewal take place?
Because it is not restricted by legal requirements, you have total freedom. Your garden, a woodland, or even the place where you first met—anywhere is possible.
We aren't religious, but can we still have traditional elements?
Yes. Humanist ceremonies focus on human values. We can maintain the dignity of a traditional ceremony, including the exchange of rings and reciting of promises.
